CAN YOU VAPE IN BALI HOTELS & AIRBNBS? READ THIS BEFORE YOU BOOK

November 01, 2026•12 min read

Vaping rules depend on the accommodation you're staying at. Some hotels allow smoking and vaping only in certain outdoor areas, while others don't allow it inside the room or even on the balcony. And yes, vape aerosol can potentially trigger certain smoke or fire detection systems, so trying to sneak a few puffs under the smoke detector isn't exactly the travel hack you want to try.

If you're booking a place to stay in Bali, the easiest thing to do is check the property's smoking and vaping policy before you arrive. If it isn't clear, ask.

It might sound like a small thing, but trust me, finding out about the rules before checking in is much better than finding out after you've already received a cleaning charge.

So, Can You Actually Vape in a Bali Hotel Room?

Usually, you shouldn't assume that you can.

If your hotel room is labelled non-smoking, treat it as a no-vaping room unless the hotel specifically tells you otherwise.

This is where people sometimes get confused. Vaping doesn't produce traditional cigarette smoke, so it can be tempting to think that a "no smoking" sign doesn't apply to your pod or disposable vape.

Unfortunately, hotels don't always make that distinction.

Some properties use their no-smoking policy to cover electronic cigarettes, vape devices, and heated tobacco products as well.

For example, The Mulia Bali currently prohibits conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vape devices, and heated tobacco products in guest rooms and certain other areas.

So before you unpack your suitcase and start relaxing on the bed with your favourite flavour, have a quick look at the hotel's rules.

Personally, that's what I'd do.

It's much easier than having to explain later why your supposedly "smoke-free" room smells like whatever flavour you've been vaping all afternoon.

Wait… Can Vape Clouds Really Trigger a Smoke Detector?

Yes, they can.

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions about vaping in hotel rooms.

People often think:

"It's vapor, not smoke. The detector won't care."

That's not necessarily true.

Vapes produce an aerosol containing tiny particles and droplets. Depending on the type of detection system, the amount of aerosol, ventilation, and how close you are to the detector, it can potentially trigger an alarm.

Of course, that doesn't mean every puff from every vape will set off every detector.

But do you really want to find out? I definitely wouldn't.

Imagine you're halfway through getting ready for dinner, suddenly the alarm goes off, hotel staff come to check the room, and now you're standing there trying to explain why you were vaping.

Not exactly the relaxing Bali experience you had in mind.

And please don't cover, unplug, disable, or tamper with a smoke detector to avoid this. Apart from potentially violating hotel rules, you're interfering with an important safety system.

A five-minute walk to a designated smoking area is a much better option.

What About Vaping on the Balcony?

This is where things get slightly tricky.

A balcony feels like it should automatically be okay.

You're outside. There's fresh air. The vape cloud disappears quickly.

Makes sense, right?

Not always.

Some hotels allow smoking or vaping on balconies, while others specifically prohibit it.

The Mulia Bali, for example, includes balconies and patios in its smoking and vaping restrictions.

So don't make the assumption that: Balcony = allowed.

Check first.

If your hotel says vaping is allowed on the balcony, great. That's an easy solution.

If it says balconies are non-smoking, then that's your answer too.

And if you're staying somewhere with a strict no-smoking policy, don't try to interpret the rules creatively. "They didn't specifically mention my particular pod system" probably isn't going to be a convincing argument with hotel management.

What About Bali Villas?

Villas are a little different because they can feel much more private than a hotel.

You might have your own garden, terrace, pool, outdoor seating area, or balcony. It can feel like your own little corner of Bali.

But private doesn't necessarily mean you can do whatever you want.

The owner or property manager can still have house rules about smoking and vaping.

One villa might allow vaping outside but prohibit it indoors. Another might have a specific smoking area. Another could have stricter restrictions across the entire property.

So when you're looking at villas, don't just check the photos.

I know the infinity pool is probably the first thing you're looking at. Same with the huge bedroom, tropical garden, and that beautiful outdoor bathtub.

But take 30 seconds to read the house rules too.

It could save you a headache later.

What Are the Airbnb Vape Rules in Bali?

There isn't one universal Airbnb rule that means vaping is allowed or prohibited everywhere.

The individual property and host's rules matter.

When you're browsing an Airbnb, look for things like:

"No smoking."

"Smoking allowed outdoors."

"Smoking permitted on balcony."

"Designated smoking area."

If you see "no smoking", I wouldn't assume that vaping is automatically excluded from the rule.

If you're not sure, message the host.

Something as simple as:

"Hi, is vaping allowed in the outdoor area or balcony?"

That's enough.

You don't need to write a full explanation about what device you're bringing, how many puffs you take per day, and what flavour you're planning to use.

Just ask.

It's much easier to get a clear answer before booking than after you've checked in.

Does "No Smoking" Also Mean No Vaping?

It can.

This is probably the safest way to look at it when you're travelling.

A property may use "smoking" as a general term for smoking and vaping, particularly when the purpose of the rule is to keep rooms free from smoke, aerosol, odours, or residue.

That's why I wouldn't look for loopholes.

If the room says non-smoking, vape somewhere else unless you've confirmed with the property that vaping is permitted.

Think of it from the owner's side for a second.

They have to prepare that room for the next guest. They don't know whether the next person is sensitive to smells. They also have to maintain their furniture, curtains, bedding, walls, and air-conditioning system.

From their perspective, keeping the room smoke- and vape-free can simply be part of maintaining the property.

Could Vaping Cost You Your Security Deposit?

Potentially, yes.

The exact rules depend on the accommodation, but some hotels, villas, and rental properties can charge cleaning fees or other penalties if guests break their smoking policies.

And this is where a seemingly harmless decision can become surprisingly expensive.

You might think:

"I'll just take a few puffs inside. Nobody will notice."

Then something goes wrong.

  • Maybe there's an alarm.

  • Maybe there's an obvious smell.

  • Maybe housekeeping notices.

  • Maybe the property has a strict inspection process.

Suddenly, those five minutes of convenience don't look so convenient anymore.

Personally, I'd rather spend that money on another Bali dinner.

Or another massage. Or honestly, just more nasi goreng.

What If You Really Need a Vape While Staying at a Hotel?

Then find out where you're allowed to use it.

Most hotels that permit smoking will have some kind of designated area. It might be outside the lobby, somewhere near the garden, or in another outdoor section of the property.

When you check in, just ask:

"Where's the smoking area?"

That's it.

Nobody at the reception desk is going to be shocked that a guest has asked that question.

And once you know where it is, you don't have to spend the rest of your stay wondering whether you're breaking a rule.

Where Can You Vape Instead?

This part is actually pretty easy.

Ask the hotel reception or villa manager where the designated smoking area is.

You might find one near:

  • The garden

  • An outdoor lounge

  • Parking area

  • A designated terrace

  • Another outdoor section of the property

Just because you're outside doesn't mean every outdoor space is automatically okay.

A pool area, restaurant terrace, or entrance may still be smoke-free.

Look for signs and follow the property's instructions.

Bali Has Smoke-Free Areas Too

There's another layer to this: local smoke-free-area rules.

Indonesia has a national framework for smoke-free areas covering places such as healthcare facilities, educational institutions, playgrounds, religious places, public transportation, workplaces, and other designated areas.

Bali also implements smoke-free-area policies, with monitoring and enforcement in places including hotels and restaurants.

So there are really two things to consider:

  1. The local rules that apply to the area.

  2. The individual hotel's or property's own rules.

A private hotel can also set rules that are stricter than what you might expect.

That's why checking the property policy is always a good move.

Hotel, Villa, or Airbnb: What Should You Expect?

Every property is different, but here's a simple way to think about it.

Hotels

Hotels often have clearly defined smoking and non-smoking areas.

You may find:

  • Non-smoking rooms

  • Designated smoking areas

  • Outdoor smoking zones

  • Balcony restrictions

Check the hotel's policy before you arrive.

Villas

Villas can offer more outdoor freedom, but you're still bound by the property's house rules.

Outdoor vaping may be okay while indoor vaping isn't.

Airbnb

The host's rules are especially important.

If the listing says “no smoking,” don't assume vaping is excluded from that rule.

When in doubt, ask.

A Good Rule to Remember: Treat Vaping Like Smoking

Here's the easiest rule I can give you:

If you're not sure whether vaping is allowed, treat it like smoking until you've confirmed otherwise.

This doesn't mean vaping and smoking are identical.

It simply means that hotels and accommodation providers may regulate both under the same policy.

That can be because of:

  • Indoor air quality

  • Odor

  • Cleaning

  • Smoke or aerosol detection

  • Furnishings

  • Future guest comfort

It's not worth getting into an argument over terminology.

What About Low-Vapor Pod Systems?

This is where things get interesting for travelers.

A compact pod system can produce less visible vapor than a large, high-powered device, depending on the device, e-liquid, coil, and how it's used.

That can make a smaller pod more convenient when you're traveling around Bali.

But there's an important distinction:

Less vapor doesn't mean you're allowed to vape somewhere that prohibits it.

A low-vapor device isn't a hotel-rule loophole.

If your room is non-smoking, take the device outside.

The benefit of a compact pod is simply that it's easier to carry around and can be less intrusive when you're using it in a place where vaping is actually permitted.

How to Avoid Losing Your Hotel Deposit

Here's the checklist I'd personally use before checking in.

1. Check the smoking policy.

Do it before booking if possible.

2. Look specifically for vaping restrictions.

Some properties mention vaping separately.

3. Check the balcony rules.

Don't assume your balcony is a free pass.

4. Find the smoking area.

Ask reception when you arrive.

5. Don't vape underneath a smoke detector.

Seriously.

6. Never tamper with safety equipment.

Not even for “just one puff.”

7. Keep your vape away from other guests.

Especially children and crowded areas.

8. Dispose of vape waste properly.

Don't leave pods or bottles around the property.

9. When you're unsure, ask.

It's much easier than dealing with a complaint later.

What Device Makes Sense for a Bali Trip?

There's no single “best” vape for every traveler.

It really depends on how you vape.

Disposable vapes

Simple and convenient.

There's no filling, coil changing, or complicated setup.

Pod systems

Compact and easy to carry around.

They're a nice option if you want something reusable without carrying a larger device.

Refillable pods

Useful for longer trips because you can bring or purchase e-liquid rather than relying entirely on disposable devices.

Larger mods

Great for experienced vapers who enjoy customization and bigger vapor production.

But for a holiday where you're constantly moving between beaches, restaurants, cafés, and day trips?

Personally, I'd rather keep things simple.

Don't Turn Your Holiday Into a Game of “Can They See Me?”

This is probably my biggest piece of advice.

You shouldn't spend your Bali vacation wondering:

  • "Can the hotel smell this?"

  • "Will the detector notice?"

  • "Can the host see me?"

  • "Can I vape on the balcony?"

That's way too much mental energy for something that can be solved by simply checking the rules.

Know where you're allowed to vape, and use that space.

Then get back to enjoying Bali.

There are sunsets to watch.

Beaches to explore.

Nasi goreng to eat.

And probably a sunset cocktail that costs more than your lunch.

The Bottom Line

Can you vape in Bali hotels and Airbnbs?

You can vape in Bali, but whether you can vape inside your hotel room, villa, or Airbnb depends on the property's rules and the applicable local regulations.

Don't assume that a vape is automatically permitted just because it doesn't produce traditional cigarette smoke.

  • Don't assume a balcony is okay.

  • Don't assume "outdoors" means anywhere you want.

  • And definitely don't interfere with smoke detectors.

The easiest approach is to check the rules before booking, ask the property if you're unsure, and use designated smoking areas whenever required.

That way, you can spend your Bali holiday thinking about the things that actually matter.

Which beach are you visiting tomorrow?

Where's the best sunset?

Should you order another plate of satay?

You know. The important stuff.
